Cigarettes and Death

StopSmokingAccording to the Center for Disease control cigarette smoking causes about 1 of every 5 deaths in the United States each year.1,6 Cigarette smoking is estimated to cause the following:1

  • 443,000 deaths annually (including deaths from secondhand smoke)
  • 49,400 deaths per year from secondhand smoke exposure
  • 269,655 deaths annually among men
  • 173,940 deaths annually among women

Why is it so hard to Quit?

Because the nicotine in cigarettes is incredibly addictive. Thankfully, you can double your chances of success by adding a nicotine replacement (like a nicotine patch or gum) to your quitting strategy. More on that in a minute. First, let’s take a look at what cigarettes are doing to your body and mind.

When you smoke, your body becomes physically addicted to the nicotine in your cigarettes. When you stop smoking, withdrawal cravings are actually your body craving nicotine.

Another tricky part of nicotine addiction? It causes your brain to link everyday habits with smoking. So when you’re trying to quit, finding yourself in situations where you would usually light up – sipping your morning coffee, driving, dealing with stress and so on – is even harder because you’re not only fighting physical cravings, but you’re fighting patterns in your brain, too. And people wonder why kicking the smoking habit is so tough.

Your brain contains receptors that react to nicotine. Over time as you continued smoking, you developed more of these receptors. Now, if you don’t have a cigarette when that trigger time comes along, the receptors react by causing withdrawal symptoms like cravings and irritability.  ~ Dr. Cheryl Healton
