VADODARA: Next time you go to a dentist for a tooth extraction, chances are that you may not be given an anesthetic. Instead, the dentist might hypnotize you for the duration of the procedure ensuring you don’t feel the pain.
Dentists are now using hypnotherapy to facilitate dental treatments in the city. Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy, is a technique that helps people focus their thoughts and achieve a calm, trance-like state. Some dentists in the city have started using hypnosis to reduce the pain and anxiety patients may experience while undergoing longer or more complicated procedures such as tooth extractions.
These dentists are qualified hypnotherapists who use hypnosis as part of their treatment. These practitioners carry out procedures by inducing numbness through hypnosis on their patients instead of injecting painkillers or administering anesthesia.
“Hypnosis is not a therapy in itself. It is used as a tool to facilitate healing for different health problems. Hypnotherapy when used with medical procedures leads to faster results. Psychologists, homeopaths, physiotherapists, dentist and practitioners of allied sciences are using hypnotherapy as an effective medium to accelerate better results,” said associate professor at M S University’s department of psychology, Dr Renu Sharma.
“In dental procedures a mild hypnotic state is induced unlike the standard deep relaxation state. A lot of dental patients have dental phobia that alters effective treatment. Hypnosis helps in removing this dental phobia resulting in a painless dental treatment. It is also highly recommended while treating children. I highly advocate the use of hypnotherapy in dentistry,” said Dr Yogesh Chandarana, amongst the pioneers of the technique in the city.
Another dentist Dr Chandrahas Raval said that he uses hypnotherapy on select patients willing to undergo the procedure. “It is a very good alternative to anesthesia leading to a pain-free treatment,” he said.
“Hypnosis aids in reducing the effect of drugs and can also be used as an alternative to medication. I have used hypnosis as an alternative to anesthesia and for treating medical problems like migraine, diabetes, problems related to anxiety and stress, depression among a host of others,” said Dr Roopa Chandrashekhar, a city-based practicing anaesthetist and hypnotherapist.
